Watertightness increases with flood height and liquid pressure on the ground canvas. Leakage rate is less than 4 liters/minute/linear meter on smooth asphalt.

If this leakage rate is considered too high, it can be reduced considerably by spreading clay beads (commonly called clay) under the front flap of the barrier. This is a natural product that gives excellent results and is easy to clean up after use.

It’s also possible to use clay in the joints between two anti-flood barriers for maximum watertightness.

Keep in mind that waterproofing depends mainly on the condition of the floor surface. The more the flap is sealed with soil, the more watertight the barrier will be – a major factor for long-term flooding.

It depends on the water level that has accumulated since the flooding began.

If the water level is less than 10% of the flood barrier's capacity, it can still be installed by:

• Adding sandbags on top of all the barrier ballast;
• AND
• Immediately pumping out the water that is behind the barrier.

Galvanized metal plates, bent to anchor to the ground, are found on the front of the barrier's flap, giving the barrier excellent water retention without being attached to the ground. The water rushes into the barrier and literally "pins" it to the ground.

The addition of a flap that is securely attached to the ground on the ballast provides total security against incoming water.

Any flood does carry a varying amount of sediment. However, even with a very large amount of sludge, there will be no change in the stability or effectiveness of the Water-Gate water barrier.

Once installed, the Water-Gate water barrier can withstand waves up to 33% of its capacity without displacement. Wave resistance has been tested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as shown in this video.

Resistance to strong winds (force 12) has been tested at the CSTB in Nantes (test platform of the Jules Verne climatic wind tunnel). Depending on weather conditions, we will advise you on the implementation precautions to be taken.

The Water-Gate water barrier is incredibly resilient and flexible. It absorbs collision energy and returns to its original shape. This flexibility makes the water barrier a major asset against any impact. The risk of slight damage to the barrier from a strong impact is slight and it is almost impossible to break the water barrier.

As this video demonstrates, impact resistance was tested by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with a large log entering the barrier at full speed at 20 degrees, without seriously affecting its structure.

Water-Gate water barriers can provide unlimited protection. Each standard barrier is 30 or 50 feet long (9.1 or 15.2 meters) and can be attached to other barriers indefinitely with Velcro/hook-and-loop fasteners, even if they are of different heights.

The water barrier cover (yellow colour) is made of PVC and is therefore very easy to repair, even for long lengths. All you need is the proper glue for this application and a piece of fabric (ideally the same colour).

For dry repair, you can find this glue at awning, trucking tarp or marquee manufacturers. In North America, it is called HH-66 vinyl cement.

In the exceptional case of a short tear while the barrier is in use during a flood, slip a piece of canvas inside the barrier to seal the breach. The seal will be made by simple water pressure on the fabric.

Each Water-Gate barrier is manufactured and inspected to exacting quality standards in our Canadian plant. A serial number is recorded for traceability at each manufacturing stage.

A. Safety and strength standards

The Water-Gate anti-pollution barrier is first and foremost a work tool that must be reliable, safe, and durable. According to the safety standards set by MegaSecur, the Water-Gate barrier is 3 times stronger than necessary for a minimum 3-day holding period. For example, if the barrier is split by 2 out of 3 partitions and it holds water to its full capacity, the water retention will still be 3+ days.

B. Construction of water barriers

Construction of the Water-Gate water barrier is done by experienced workers with industrial sewing machines. The stitch used is called "barbed stitch." This type of stitch will not come apart when cut. A broken barred stitch does not affect the next barred stitch.

In addition to using a safe type of stitching, we have added a second parallel stitching on all barrier partitions (except for the WX-06 model). Of course, we finalize the manufacturing of each barrier with a thorough inspection.

C. Main water barrier materials

The yellow canvas, which covers the water barrier, is a PVC-coated polyester canvas. The main advantage of this type of fabric is its resistance to abrasion; meaning, if the fabric slips on the ground, tear risk is minimal.

The water barrier is assembled with partitions made of woven polyethylene fabric, which is a lightweight fabric that is extremely tear resistant.

The sewing thread used is 100% polyester for a rigidity that is well-suited to the PVC fabric (yellow) and polyethylene partitions. 100% galvanized and rustproof steel plates are used as ballast.

D. Durability

Since Water-Gate barriers are made entirely of polymer, their life expectancy is estimated at more than 20 years if used occasionally, or for short periods of time.

Although ultraviolet rays are the most harmful to water barrier materials, this only amounts to 25% degradation after more than 20,000 hours of sunlight. In addition, the polymer fabrics have been treated to counter the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays.

And since the water barrier is made entirely of polymer, there is no risk of degradation due to moisture.

Water-Gate barrier materials easily withstand temperatures from +50°C/+120°F to -40°C/-40°F. Even when stored for several years at these temperatures (up to 10 years of certification according to the material manufacturers), the Water-Gate water barrier remains just as effective!
